The challenge
When people lose someone close, they keep messages, photos, voice notes and memories scattered across phones and chats. Be Right Back set out to turn them into an avatar you can talk to.
The audience is people who are grieving: every piece of text had to be restrained and never promotional, the data had to be protected as sensitive data, and the AI had to know when to stop playing a role.
Our approach
We built the platform around memories. A guided journey gathers the relationship, personality traits, way of speaking and typical phrases; then people upload text, photos, audio, video, documents and WhatsApp exports, which are transcribed, described and made searchable. The avatar replies drawing only on those memories, in writing or by voice.
Alongside the conversation we designed the safeguards: a safety layer that recognises signs of crisis and responds out of character, encryption on every path, explicit consent regarding third parties' rights, and data export. The platform lives on the web, and the same experience is also available in a native iPhone app.
What we built
-
A guided journey
Relationship, personality, way of speaking and typical phrases: the avatar grows out of a story, not a form.
-
Memories of every kind
Text, photos, voice notes, video, documents and WhatsApp exports, transcribed and described so they can be found again.
-
Answers from memories
The avatar draws only on what the family has shared and can attach the photo closest to the topic.
-
A crisis safeguard
When it detects signs of distress, the avatar steps out of character and points to where help can be found.
-
Sensitive data, treated as such
Encrypted messages, consent on third parties' rights, data export and transparency about the AI.
-
Time capsules
A message to open on a chosen date, written in the voice of the person being remembered.

The result
Be Right Back is in private beta, in Italian and English: testers create their first avatar and talk to it, and each conversation collects feedback on how they feel and how closely the replies resemble the person.
